One Chel of an Adventure shares their favorite tools, how they grow their audience, how they find sponsors, and more.

1 of 13What question are you asked the most when you tell someone you're a blogger/content creator?

1

“What does that mean? You take photos of your food?” Haha! I think most understand what it means to be a blogger/content creator, but there are still plenty of people out there that don’t get it. I also get asked a lot, “So how do I get free stuff like you?” That one is frustrating to me because I’ve worked hard to get to where I am, and 90% of the time I am doing work in exchange for the “free stuff” so it’s really not “free.”

2 of 13How do brands find you?

Most of the time they reach out to me directly via email or Instagram DM. I think a lot of brands find me through Instagram, though some come through my blog as well though.

Where do your best sponsors come from? IG or Blog?

Definitely from Instagram, that’s where my largest following is and it's much more visible to brands in that sense

I think they really need to know that they cannot control our voice. I totally understand brands want to get a specific message across, but our audiences can tell when a message doesn’t sound authentic and I kinda feel like that defeats the whole purpose of using an influencer for marketing. Also knowing that they do need to have some kind of budget to compensate... many influencers do this full time, and unfortunately, you can’t live off of product exchange alone.

5 of 13How do you decide how much to charge a brand?

1

I look at the size of the company and the scope of work they want. I also take into consideration the time it will take to create the content. Another aspect is exclusivity rights, if they want that, then I charge more as well because that means I have to turn down other paying opportunities that might come along.

Is there a specific price multiple you charge for exclusive content?

It usually depends on the scenario and what they’re asking for. I judge it case by case.

I only accept partnerships that I truly find useful or think my audience would. So it’s easier to stay true to your voice if you do that, and I am upfront with brands from the start on that.

I followed a lot of other influencers in my niche at the time (travel) and interacted a lot with them and their followers. Doing hashtag research is a big one to help being discovered. Engage, engage, engage. And of course, produce content that people actually want to see!

Do you have any tips/tricks for hashtag research?

Start off with a main hashtag, then go and look at other relevant photos that are tagged with that and see what else they’re hashtagging in that same photo.

If I’m ever feeling burned out then I take a little break. I truly enjoy this, but everyone needs a break from time to time! I think that's important to keep from getting too burned out. And just have fun with it!

Find your niche and stick to it. Once you’ve established yourself there, then you can start to reach out to do other things.

How do you know when to branch out to other things?

When you feel like you’ve got a solid follower base, then just go for it. I was afraid people weren’t going to like it as much, but so far so good haha!

Ooh that’s a tough one. Recently, I think my work with Mann Eye and having LASIK surgery has been a big one. It has changed my life and I have had so many people asking me questions and asking for guidance on that which has been awesome!

Anything travel related is my favorite! But I also enjoy working with consumer goods brands, because it’s fun to find a really awesome product and get to share that with my followers!

Do you have any specific brands that you would love to partner with? Any local Austin brands?

Any kind of airline or cruise would be awesome -- I love Carnival Cruises! I like working with Austin brands in general because I think it's important to support your community!
